Big infrastructure can move a city forward without holding the planet back 🌍

On #WorldEnvironmentDay, we’re reflecting on what that looks like in action on Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel.

John Holland played a key role in building five new underground stations and twin tunnels beneath Melbourne’s CBD, as part of Cross Yarra Partnership and the Rail Network Alliance.

It’s work that has helped the project achieve two of the industry’s highest sustainability recognitions.

All five stations have earned 6 Star Green Star As Built ratings from the Green Building Council of Australia.

The project as a whole was also awarded a ‘Leading Rating’ by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council for its As-Built construction, achieving an impressive score of 96 points.

These outcomes reflect industry-leading decisions built into every stage of design and construction.

We avoided using over 230,000 tonnes of carbon emissions - the equivalent of taking more than 90,000 passenger vehicles off Melbourne’s roads for a year.

This includes cutting the use of carbon intensive cement by more than half and reducing energy use across construction and operation by 44 per cent.

Smart design is built into everyday use, from solar power at Arden Station to regenerative braking on lifts and escalators to capture and reuse energy that would otherwise be lost.

Rain and stormwater harvesting is built into every station, alongside a 55 per cent reduction in portable water demand across construction and operation.

Brand new public spaces and First Nations led artwork at each station have also helped connect people to place.

From tunnelling deep below the city to delivering and maintaining the stations people will use every day, this is what we do best. Delivering complex projects in a way that creates lasting value for communities and the environment.

Introducing Waterloo’s newest public plaza! 👏

We were honoured to join our development partner Mirvac at the official opening of Badumurru Place, Waterloo Metro Quarter’s new public precinct and a celebration of place, culture, and community.

Badumurru Place has been shaped through a strong connection to Country and community, featuring commissioned artworks by Carmen Glynn-Braun, Nadeena Dixon, and Lorna Munro.

Badumurru combines ‘Badu’ meaning water and ‘Murru’ meaning pathway in the local Gadigal language. The name honours the wetlands, waterways, and traditions of movement and gathering that have always defined this part of Country.

The new plaza sits at the heart of a precinct John Holland has played a key part in revitalising.

We delivered the Waterloo Metro Station in 2024 as part of the city-shaping Sydney Metro City project, connecting communities to the Sydney CBD, Barangaroo and North Sydney.

Above and around it, we delivered the Southern Precinct of the Waterloo Metro Quarter in partnership with Mirvac, including the design and construction of the student accommodation and social housing, community space and central plaza.

And through our Metro Trains Sydney joint venture, we operate the driverless metro network that connects people to this precinct every day.

From underground to street level, Waterloo Metro Quarter is a precinct that’s brought to life by John Holland’s fully integrated expertise across building, rail and transport and infrastructure.

We’ve officially topped out at Princess Alexandra Hospital! 🏗️

Now at its highest point, our team delivered four new floors directly above the hospital’s existing emergency department that never closed its doors throughout construction.

It’s the experience our team brings to working in live healthcare environments that allowed us to reach this milestone without interrupting critical care below.

When complete, the expansion will add 249 new inpatient beds to one of Queensland’s busiest hospitals, including:

✅ 30 additional ICU beds and treatment areas
✅ 13 new cancer treatment bays
✅ Refurbished cardiac catheter lab admission and recovery areas

For patients across Queensland, this means greater access to acute care and specialist health services when it matters most.

One of the most direct ways we create opportunity for First Nations businesses is through who we engage on our projects.

On the Lake Macdonald Dam Improvement Project we’re delivering for @seqwater in Queensland, we worked with @magnitudepipelinesconstruction – a 100% Indigenous owned business – to construct nearly two kilometres of HDPE pipeline for the siphon system used in lake lowering works.

The team delivered an innovative, low-emission pipeline solution ahead of schedule, replacing traditional diesel-powered pumping with a more sustainable approach.

Through the partnership with Magnitude, we’ve supported local jobs and helped embed First Nations knowledge and perspectives into the project.

It’s an example of what’s possible when First Nations businesses are given the opportunity to deliver on major infrastructure projects. Magnitude’s success has since opened doors for further Tier 1 opportunities on John Holland projects, contributing to greater supplier diversity across our business.

National Reconciliation Week is a moment to reflect on our reconciliation journey. We’re incredibly proud that since 2020, we’ve spent over $740 million with First Nations businesses across several projects, helping create more employment and procurement opportunities across the country.

This contributes to how we’re taking an ‘All In’ approach to reconciliation across our business.

Mater Hospital Springfield is officially open! 🏥

Our Queensland building team couldn’t be prouder. Delivered on time and on budget, Mater Hospital Springfield brings 186 new public beds, the Greater Springfield region’s first public emergency department and a full suite of health services to one of Queensland’s fastest growing communities.

We were honoured to mark the occasion alongside Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland; the Honourable David Crisafulli MP, Queensland Premier; the Honourable Tim Nicholls, Minister for Health and Ambulance Services; Cr Teresa Harding, Mayor of Ipswich; and the Most Reverend Shane Mackinlay, Archbishop of Brisbane, who blessed the facility.

Mater Hospital Springfield is one of several major health projects John Holland is proud to be delivering for Queensland. Following the delivery of Logan Hospital Expansion Stage 1 in 2024, our teams are currently on site at the Princess Alexandra Hospital expansion, Logan Hospital Expansion Stage 2, and the new Toowoomba Hospital.

We’re making great progress on Penrith Stadium! 🏟️

The Eastern Grandstand roof is nearing completion, and four new light towers are now in place.

Standing 50 metres high and weighing 20 tonnes each, the new light towers are fitted with LED floodlights designed to last 100,000 hours and cut energy costs by up to 38 per cent.

It’s a more sustainable solution that will also deliver better visibility on the field and a more immersive experience for players, fans and concertgoers.

Out on the field, the Western Grandstand roof is taking shape. Our team is pre-assembling the 24-metre-long roof modules at ground level before lifting them into place. This approach reduces work at height and enables a safer and more precise installation.

Lifting and placing a 180-tonne piece of precision machinery is challenging at the best of times.

Throw in a worksite that’s 250 metres below ground and you start to appreciate the complexity and the unique challenges the team are successfully managing in delivering the Kidston pumped hydro project for Genex Power in central Queensland.

Over the weekend, the John Holland McConnell Dowell team successfully completed one of the project’s largest and most technically demanding lifts to date, carefully positioning one of two stators in the underground powerhouse.

The stator is the fixed part of the generator that creates the magnetic field required to produce electricity. It’s a piece of engineering that requires precise pre-assembly and exact placement – in this case, with a level tolerance of just 1.5mm.

This milestone is a credit to the skill, patience and teamwork of everyone involved in planning and executing the lift safely and successfully.

With the first stator now in place, the team is already preparing for the next major milestone — installation of the first rotor as the generator assembly continues.

For students from Urangan and Aldridge State High Schools on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, it was anything but a normal school day 👷

Our Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) team, in partnership with @constructionskillsqueensland and @worldskillsau, opened the doors of our project site to students as part of the Try a Trade program.

From electrical work and carpentry to bricklaying, STEM activities and site tours, students had the unique opportunity to experience life on a major construction site and explore firsthand the many pathways the industry has to offer.

Every student was kitted out with safety boots, which were donated to their schools for future visits.

It’s what our partnership with CSQ is all about. Showing young Queenslanders that construction is a real and rewarding career pathway.
